"Show no Morrissey."

✋ A Note on This Episode

R.I.P. Ozzy Osbourne — The Prince of Darkness

December 3, 1948 — July 22, 2025

This episode was pre-recorded prior to Ozzy's passing on July 22, 2025. The Blizzard of Ozz vs Diary of a Madman discussion within reflects our love of his catalog — a love that only grows in his absence. HAIL AND FAREWELL to the Prince of Darkness. Thank you for everything you've done for metal.

About This Episode

Generally speaking, an artist's debut album will often be quite good — while their sophomore album, in contrast, will often be far more advanced, sophisticated, and light years better in terms of songwriting and overall production. While this is more often than not the rule, there are some notable exceptions.

Metal Nerdery goes band by band through some of the most debated first-vs-second matchups in metal history — from the obvious ones to the genuinely contentious. Is Paranoid better than the Black Sabbath debut? Is The New Order better than The Legacy? And in the instances where dissenting opinions clashed, the resulting debate may have impacted the feelings of others "forevermore."

The Beer of the Episode

OB-1 Can-Obi — Beer of the Episode

OB-1 Can-Obi

#ObiOneCanObi — "Oh it smells like green pee…" The episode's beer of the episode. Use the Force. Or at least use the can opener.

Debut vs Sophomore — The Matchups

Show No Mercy VS Hell Awaits 🔥 Slayer

"Okay, I'm gonna make this real easy to start…" "What?" The episode that kicked off the entire Metal Nerdery Death Match series gets revisited here as the opening matchup. Show No Mercy (1983) vs Hell Awaits (1985) — we already know who won that one. "Progressive? Maybe…" "I do wanna go back to the Slayer thing…" #titillation "You like Show No Morrissey…"

"Show No Morrissey." / "I didn't fart in your face, I didn't dishonor your family by farting in your face…"
Too Fast for Love VS Shout at the Devil 2nd Wins

"How about Shout at the Devil vs Too Fast for Love?" "I am so lost… exactly…" Mötley Crüe's leap from the raw debut to the polished, darker, heavier sophomore record. Not even a debate for most people.

Endless Pain VS Pleasure to Kill 2nd Wins

"Kreator… how about Kreator?" "Violent… what is it?" "It's not that different… it's not as memorable…" "Put on your 1983 hat — Ride the Lightning was not even out yet." The Teutonic thrash debate.

Black Sabbath VS Paranoid 🔥 Too Close

"If we're doing a #DeathMatch…" The most impossible comparison in all of metal — the album that birthed the genre against the album that defined it. Both are perfect. The argument goes nowhere — which is the correct outcome.

"Van Halen or Van Halen II?" #VanHalen — "You're No Good" (Van Halen II – 1979). "Maybe Kerry King played bass on all the Van Halen albums…" The original is the definitive statement. Van Halen II has its moments but the debut is untouchable.

"Maybe Kerry King played bass on all the Van Halen albums…"

"The Legacy or The New Order?" "That's very easy…" "It's like asking a parent with 2 kids 'which one do you love more?'…" The New Order is the answer — one of the finest moments in thrash metal history. "That's very easy." No debate. #TestamentCreepy

Holy Diver VS The Last in Line 🔥 Contentious

"Holy Diver or The Last in Line?" "Careful back there…" "No I don't! OMG, I'm not trying to be difficult!" "Let's make an album real quick…" #heshammered "What are we doing now? He's lost the argument… you're doing what women do… because you lost…" "That's the next episode…" #forevermore "So anyway…" The one matchup that nearly ended the podcast.

"Careful back there…" / #forevermore

"Which Pantera are we talking about?" "Okay, that one loses…" "Here's why Vulgar is so much better…" "Roadhouse Blues, but heavier…" "Toly different…" A New Level (Vulgar Display of Power – 1992). "Did it make you feel special in your special place?"

"Roadhouse Blues, but heavier…" / "Toly different…"

"This is gonna hurt… Blizzard or Diary?" "If you're talking 1982…" #OzzyOsbourne — Over the Mountain (Diary of a Madman – 1981). #MatthewsReflections. Also: The Ultimate Sin (1986) — "We did the Bark at the Moon dive… put that keyboard back in the closet where it belongs…"

High Voltage / T.N.T. VS Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

"What about AC/DC?" "It was '81 when Dirty Deeds was released in the U.S." "Does she know how to run all the equipment?" The AC/DC discography timeline debate — always complicated by the US vs Australian release schedules.

"What about Exodus? Bonded by Blood or Pleasures?" "I like rabbit holes…" Piranha (Bonded by Blood – 1985). "I think I'm done… I should go…" Bonded by Blood is one of the greatest debut thrash albums ever recorded. Pleasures of the Flesh had no chance.

"I think I'm done… I should go…"
