Spring, 1991. Thrash had hit its apex as a genre and was beginning the transition into what would become “the next wave” of thrash with a sound and identify located somewhere between the thrash, groove, and death metal genres.

With SEPULTURA’s 4th album, ARISE, emerging a mere 2 years after their 1989 thrash masterpiece, Beneath The Remains, the Brazilian metal shamans continued to refine and intensify the evolution of their sound, creating a veritable cocktail of extreme metal with new dimensions of heaviness, including tons of crushing riffs, creepy soft intros, and eerily dark harmonies.

It’s time to discover how “normal writing” identifies and hear what it sounds like when you take ayahuasca in the jungles of Brazil.

Always remember to never “be an A word or a C word” and instead “be a blessing” because we are all struggling to cope in this new era of “middle evil”. Raise your standards and elevate yourself to something greater than leaping over a “one-inch hurdle” (like riding a bike to the mall 10 miles just to play “hide the finger” in a movie theater perhaps).

Find out which song title we thought identified as “a slang term for the downstairs” and JOIN US on this journey of metal discourse as we dive into the next wave of thrash brutality that could only be identified as SEPULTURA’s ARISE.

ARISE:

but thrash, that opening riff. Initially, it sounds like it could just have easily been on Beneath The Remains.

It’s basically non-stop, like the perfect blending of Metallica and Slayer with their own unique twist.

“I…see the world old,

I…see the world dead…”

DEAD EMBRYONIC CELLS

Kind of an industrial sound there at the opening. The song title is basically a fancier way of saying “abortion cells”.

Not really their “Enter Sandman”, but the riff in the middle will earworm you for sure, mainly because it’s much slower, heavier, and groovier than the barrage of turbo charged thrash riffs that surround it in the front and back.

(You know…THAT riff!).

“Laboratory sickness,

Infects humanity,

No hope for cure,

Die by technology…”

DESPERATE CRY:

Soft intro…kinda doomy. Kinda slow.

Has prog elements to it. There’s no other voice in metal like Max Cavalera. This is classic, signature, Sepultura. The slower, more grooving riffs seem to stand out much more than the breakneck, turbo charged thrash riffs as they have a little more substance and seem to breathe a little more.

Much like with Metallica’s …AJFA, not only is this Sepultura’s 4th album, but it’s certainly their most progressive album up to this point in their catalog. This song alone could have been cut into 2 songs, easily. And there’s a few parts here and there that the producer probably should have cut out; like they don’t fit at all.

“Creation

Of insane rule,

All we hear desperate cry…”

MURDER:

Sort of a happy riff there (maybe hints of Anthrax perhaps?), or at least “happy” for Sepultura anyway. There’s certainly no other guitar sound in thrash that sounds anything like Sepultura.

The “ugly” harmonies have that eerie Slayer/Death kind of vibe. If you listen closely, you can hear the subtle clicking of the bass in the mix. Definitely a cross between classic thrash and the first wave of death metal.

That ending though…what was that? It almost seemed like they’d hit the end and then changed their mind…or they were going for that Black Sabbath type of ending.

“I can’t trust anyone,

Criminals within the law,

I have something to say,

“Where I live, don’t believe in another day”…”

SUBTRACTION:

Straight ahead, thrash style. Definitely some early groove metal elements amidst the rapid-fire riffs and double bass.

They definitely pack a lot of riffs into a single song. Comparing this to …AJFA is accurate re: the progressive nature of the longer songs and the incredible boat load of riffs contained within.

To be fair, they could have done a little “Subtraction” in the number of riffs in some of the songs on this album, including this one. In a strange way, sometimes bands almost cannibalize their own potential output by trying to cram a million riffs into a single song instead of splitting up some of those riffs and creating additional, other songs.

“Confused leaders behind our backs,

Stifling our ideas,

Misunderstand signs of progress,

Minds of time regress…”

ALTERED STATE:

Creepy, windy, tribal intro. Sort of like tripping on ayahuasca in the jungle with the boys from Sepultura in the Amazon with a monstrous thunderstorm approaching off in the distance (which would truly be an altered state). The siren sound signals urgency…very heavy.

The harmonies definitely have a Death/Slayer type of vibe. Some weird, ugly harmonies right before the tasty guitar solo weedly woos. A nice (albeit somewhat out of place) acoustic guitar break near the end of the song. Maybe there is such a thing as “too many riffs in one song” because there are definitely spots that could use a shave (so to speak).

“Endless repression by majority,

A master without command,

Strange new dimension disturbing my brain,

Censored ideas, counterfeit answers…”

UNDER SIEGE (REGNUM IRAE)

Acoustic guitar intro and REALLY LOUD snare drums (probably produced by Lars). Dark, slow, and doomy. The backward reverb vocals certainly increase the creepy vibes although unfortunately, the spoken word part gets almost completely washed out with all of the effects.

Definitely slower and heavier than the first part of the record. Definitely a bit disjointed, structure wise, too (in spots). It doesn’t really flow as well as the majority of the other songs. At least it’s got a killer guitar solo, and it ends strong.

“Living in a dying age,

Persecute the human race,

Triumph of death in the wasteland,

Blood signs your epitaph…”

MEANINGLESS MOVEMENTS:

Reminds me of the exact riff Jon Dore refers to in his joke “You don’t like metal?”.

This song flows a little more than the previous track. Peppered throughout with quality thrash and groove moments, this tune definitely has a much better flow than some of the others, with a rather abrupt ending that seems to come out of nowhere.

“Contradictory truth, secrets in lies,

Meaningless movements…”

INFECTED VOICE:

Depending on which version of the album you have, this may or may not be the killer closer. Definitely a good, thrashy closer. Has elements of B.T.R. at the chorus, with a similar flow & cadence.

“Conscience is fair,

Unfaithful words,

Betrayal and greed,

Past thoughts to win alone…”

ORGASMATRON:

A faithfully executed rendition of the original version performed by the mighty Motorhead. Maybe a tad heavier than the original, it’s definitely solid. Very well done indeed.
