The entire month of October is Halloween. And you can’t do October without TYPE-O-NEGATIVE, as they are the official soundtrack to the month of Halloween.
Released August 20, 1996, OCTOBER RUST, their 4th studio album (or 3rd if you count “Origin of the Feces” as a “live” album, which we actually do, even though it’s technically not) is much more gothy, textured, and atmospheric than previous TYPE-O albums while still maintaining the same gothic, heavy, doom laden aesthetic of their previous albums, making it the perfect sonic representation of all things Halloween: vampires, werewolves, haunted houses, haunted relationships, hot bisexual goth girls who are into threesomes, bottles of red wine, and lonely forests bathed in the colorful, seasonal transformation that is autumn.

“That dude is Dracula, man…”
It's time to imagine Molly Ringwald dressed as a goth girl for Halloween as you feast your ears on the creepiest, evilest sounding keyboards in metal while summoning Bacchus (the god of wine and revelry and/or tits) to help prepare for this season’s “fistivities”.
Discover the actual definition of “zoanthropic paranoia”, find out what happens when you make a goth girl squirt, and learn about Peter Steele’s lesser known “nickname” when you JOIN US as we rrrrrrroll our R’s rrrrrrright on through creepy season with OCTOBER RUST.
BAD GROUND/(Untitled)
What a fun way to start off an album…practical joker style. Wait, is it not plugged in? WTF!?
LOVE YOU TO DEATH
The keyboards in Type-O music are unmistakable. THIS is the sound of October…the entire month of October. The entire month of Halloween. So many memories come rushing back when listening to this album. Sweet memories of the mid-90’s, fall, unrealized love and unprocessed lust. This song is the soundtrack to all of those things.
“Yeah…”
This is the perfect backdrop for a cloudy October afternoon or a sunny, crisp, and cool October morning with temperatures in the upper 50’s, lower 60’s. It’s the ultimate soundtrack to October, and this should be played all the way through, every single day, all the way through to Halloween. It’s the perfect soundtrack for lost love, autumn, and cloudy, witchy afternoons.
“Am I good enough…for you?”
An erotic, goth metal love song. A soundtrack to walking through the woods with your beloved before finding an open spot to blaze up and make love as the clouds gradually take over and the late afternoon succumbs to impending dusk. Someone I was once close with loved this song, and I believe she wished it to be the soundtrack for the lovemaking that would never come to be.
BE MY DRUIDESS
This sounds like heavy, gothic, metal, pop music…the kind of thing you’d hear if you went to a vampire goth bar to pick up someone for the night. An abundance of atmosphere and texture on this record; the perfect soundtrack to autumn brimming with enough erotic, gothic, energy to make your goth girl’s panties soaked with she-plasm.
“I’ll do anything…to make you come…”
GREEN MAN
Peter was actually known as “The Green Man” to many in his prior life with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. The r-r-r-rolled R’s really drive this one home. It’s sweet that children weren’t afraid of the gentle giant that would later become known to the world as Peter Steele.
Sounds like something to listen to while driving through the mountains with fall in full swing, the leaves changing color and quietly falling to the ground, resulting in a patchwork quilt crafted by nature’s paintbrush.
RED WATER (CHRISTMAS MOURNING)
A doomy & heavy funeral dirge amidst brisk winds of sadness, oblivion, and mourning. For an album so steeped in Halloween imagery and vibe, this song even puts a dark shadow on Christmas, making it feel like Halloween all over again.
Surely losing someone to the inevitability of mortality on Christmas day must be a devastating experience, given that it’s supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year”.
MY GIRLFRIEND’S GIRLFRIEND
The ultimate soundtrack to a menage a trois…and in case anyone is wondering, the correct math for any threesome is 2 girls, 1 dude.
“Balls jangle…WOW!”
Check out the video for this one…go-go dancing is included.
Side note: if 2 random goth girls were to randomly come up to any man on earth and offer up a 3-some, that man would be a fool to NOT participate. Just be sure to have a pack of Djarum Black clove cigarettes on standby in case one should be so blessed.
“WOW!”
DIE WITH ME
A song of loss, heartbreak, and loneliness that shows a softer side of Type-O that’s a far cry from the previous albums. To be fair, heartbreak does make for some absolutely beautiful music.
Sometimes life interrupts love, and hearts become undone, broken, and lost. A dirge lamenting a relationship that will never be ever again.
BURNT FLOWERS FALLEN
“Dude, what kind of goat is that, man?”
Sounds like this tune, the previous one, and the next one are all linked together to the same broken relationship story.
“Yeah I think she’s fallen…out of…love…”
Sort of a strangely upbeat shuffle to proclaim that the one he loved has fallen out of love with him.
IN PRAISE OF BACCHUS
Bacchus is the god of wine…and revelry…or wine and tits, depending on where you get your information. This is the lament that Peter sang to his signature bottle of red wine after his woman left him.
“She hates me…”
This album is enough to make any mortal man who listens to it long for a beautiful goth girl’s dark heart and tender touch.
CINNAMON GIRL
A cover of Neil Young’s 1970 classic. A bit of a throwback to Type-O’s cover of “Summer Breeze” (on Bloody Kisses), also from around that time. Maybe not the best song on the album, but the vibe is right, and it fits.
There’s a video for this one too. Always thought this song was about redheads but apparently, it is not.
THE GLORIOUS LIBERATION OF THE PEOPLE’S TECHNOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF VINNLAND BY THE COMBINED FORCES OF THE UNITED TERRITORIES OF EUROPA
Easily the most fantastic name for an instrumental track anywhere in the history of all of metal. Very ambient and very loud. With helicopters…and missiles.
WOLF MOON (INCLUDING ZOANTHROPIC PARANOIA)
This song and the last song (“Haunted”) are 100% Halloween. Also, if you don’t know how to roll your R’s, you should really practice, as it’s one of the most important parts of being able to properly sing along to this album.
“Yourself in my mouth…will you leave me with your taste?”
Listening to this particular track conjures visions of grey cloudy skies, a damp chill in the air, and a congregation of dead leaves covering the ground of enchanted forest trails that lie deep within the woods.
“Beware…”
Sounds like a song about menstrual cycles, werewolves, and vampires. The perfect soundtrack for Halloween month.
HAUNTED
It’s dark out, the moon shining down it’s eerie white, blue light on the sleeping earth below as it sits alone, obscured by clouds racing across the sky. Classic Type-O slowness. Gothic doom metal at its absolute finest.
“I hate the morning…”
The spoken word part by Peter, with the crickets and lone guitar in the background (or maybe a lute?) truly sets the tone for Halloween season. Every single word screams autumn and beckons the creepy chill of All Hallows Eve.
