"We take the band. We go through the full catalog. Album by album. No skipping."

"That's the thing about Inside the Metal — you always end up discovering something you didn't know you were missing."

"We go in. We don't always come back the same."

What Is Inside the Metal?

Inside the Metal is one of Metal Nerdery's most beloved recurring episode formats — a dedicated deep dive into a single band's complete studio catalog, from debut to most recent release, album by album and track by track.

Unlike a tribute episode or a greatest hits rundown, an Inside the Metal episode is a full excavation. We cover the formation of the band, the lineup changes, the sound evolution, the context of each album's release, the key tracks, the deep cuts, the underrated moments, and the verdict on the full body of work. It's the episode format for when a band deserves more than a mention — they deserve a proper reckoning.

Some bands get one episode. Some get two or three. Some get revisited years later because A Lot Has Changed and their catalog demanded a second look. Every Inside the Metal episode is a different journey — because every band is a different universe.

What to Expect from an Inside the Metal Episode

🎙 The Full Catalog

Every studio album covered — from the debut through the most recent release. No skipping. No cherry-picking. The good, the great, and the ones nobody talks about.

🎥 The Context

Where the band came from. Who influenced them. What was happening in metal at the time of each release. Why it mattered then and whether it still matters now.

🎵 The Deep Cuts

The tracks that never get played on classic rock radio but absolutely define the band. The album closers. The Side 2 openers. The songs casual fans have never heard.

🏆 The Verdict

At the end of every Inside the Metal episode, the full catalog gets ranked. Which album is the peak? Which one is underrated? Which one should have been better? The verdict is always reached.

Some of the Bands We've Gone Inside the Metal With

…and many more. New Inside the Metal episodes drop regularly — check the full episode catalog for the complete and growing list.

A Few of Our Favorites

Sleep — Inside the Metal: "You say the name and you hear the sound of bongs and you can smell weed." All four Sleep albums covered — Volume One, Holy Mountain, Dopesmoker, and The Sciences. "They are one of the few bands in history to have sonically recreated what being supernaturally high actually SOUNDS like." Dragonaut (#killeropener — "you can hit play and immediately smell weed"). It smells like 1976 in there. All the shag carpet. All the wood paneling.

Kyuss — Inside the Metal: "The godfathers of Desert Stoner Metal." All four albums covered — Wretch, Blues for the Red Sun, Welcome to Sky Valley, and …And the Circus Leaves Town. "It's got all the things in the stuff and the stuff in the things." #katzenjammer. Put on your rock and roll pants. "Before QOTSA, Them Crooked Vultures, or Eagles of Death Metal, there was Kyuss." Is it pronounced Kyuss? Or Kyuss? The debate was not resolved.

Dark Angel — Inside the Metal: Formed in 1981, hailing from Downey, California — the birthplace of the mighty Hetfield. Thrash masters who unleashed a darker, faster, more aggressive brand of thrash initially reminiscent of Slayer's early death metal aesthetic, later evolving into something more progressive and technical. "When it comes to old school thrash, those guys got a LOT to say — and a very short time in which to say it."

Coroner — Inside the Metal: "The best roadies Celtic Frost ever had." Switzerland's masters of techno-thrash sorcery — "the Rush of thrash." Their logo. Masked Jackal. The Newsted treatment on the bass. And a Purple Haze cover that will make you question everything you thought you knew about that song. "How crazy can the riffs be?" Very, very crazy.

Type O Negative — (Back) Inside the Metal (Again): "Technically we already did an Inside the Metal on Type O, but that was 3 years ago — and A LOT has changed." The Halloween edition from the Bunkerpoon Dungeon. Slow, Deep and Hard. Origin of the Feces ("their Live Undead"). October Rust. Bloody Kisses. World Coming Down. "Their catalog is all about thickness and girth." Platform shoes. Roll your R's. Happy Halloween.
